16th-century coaching inn in Lewes, cradle of American Independence

History & Significance

The White Hart is the former coaching inn where Thomas Paine forged his radical policies in the debating club of the old inn. His pamphlet "Common Sense" sold half a million copies in 1776 and inspired the Declaration of Independence. The building now offers a restaurant and lounges with wood panelling, oak beams, and open fireplaces.

Accommodations

Guest rooms include four-poster beds and feature handwritten welcome notes with a Roberts radio playing classical music on arrival. Room categories such as Snug, Comfy, and Fancy offer sloping floors due to the building's listed status; no lift is available on site. Luggage storage and 24-hour front desk are provided, and some rooms overlook the South Downs.

Dining & Entertainment

The restaurant is set in a Georgian antique oak-panelled dining room and serves British cuisine with a seasonal menu. The bar offers a selection of cask ales, cocktails including an Old Fashioned, and live music in characterful lounges with fireplaces. Outdoor seating on the terrace gives views of the South Downs.

Wellness & Leisure

The on-site leisure club offers an indoor heated swimming pool and a well-equipped gym. Spa treatments and aqua fit sessions are available for guests. The hotel also provides a sun terrace and outdoor furniture.

Location & Nearby Attractions

The hotel is centrally located in Lewes, close to Lewes Castle & Barbican House Museum. South Downs National Park and Brighton Marina are within a short distance. No on-site parking is available; nearby car parks include Maltings (steep hill) and Brook Street (8-minute walk).

“This inn, steeped in history, appears to strike a fine balance between its 16th-century roots and modern comfort. The thoughtful renovation, with its cosy lounges and oak-panelled restaurant, offers a distinct charm. For those prioritizing location and amenities, the proximity to Lewes Castle and the inclusion of a leisure club are definite advantages.”

fabulous food excellent service disorganised staff sad eggs
The restaurant had fabulous food and excellent service. Staff provided sweet treats and other details that were well thought through. The bed was super comfy. The bathroom shower was a treat!
I found breakfast to be very disappointing. There was no cereal, fruit, yoghurt, croissants or pastries. Scrambled and poached eggs looked very sad.

complimentary treat comfy bed modern convenience
every detail in the room was well-considered , from the provided ear plugs to the complimentary sweet treats. the bed was comfy and the bathroom shower was a treat. the room featured tasteful victorian charm with modern conveniences. i also appreciated the personalized notes.
the bedroom became very hot, even though the weather outside wasn't especially hot. the room already had fans, so the management seemed aware of the issue. i think management should address this problem to improve guests comfort.
